INEC recruitment: Commission reveals number of ad-hoc staff needed in Cross Rivers

Ahead of the forthcoming elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Cross River on Wednesday said it will recruit 15,000 ad-hoc staff for the exercise.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dr Frankland Briyai, made the disclosure during a briefing on preparations of the commission for the elections in Calabar, the state capital, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.
According to Briyai: “We are going to recruit 15,000 ad-hoc staff through online application.
“Already, we have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to use their members.
“If they are not enough, we recruit from the Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
“If we cannot get the required number, we go to the higher institutions in the state, and if we still cannot get the required number, we will go for the ex-corps members.
“We believe that these classes of people will give us the manpower required for the elections. The process is going to be through online application.’’
Briyai stated that those recruited would be subjected to taking oath of allegiance that also included members of staff of INEC.
“This is to ensure that they do all that are required for a credible election in the state. “We are ready for credible, fair and free elections,’’ he said.

The centre for cyber crime investigation (CCCI), Noida, India has arrested a Nigerian, Aujo Olaniyi for allegedly duping a Greater Noida resident of Rs 22 lakh on the pretext of offering a job in the United States.

 

According to Times of India, the accused, who stays in Bengaluru had impersonated as an official of a US-based firm claiming to offer a job in the reputed company trapping his target in a web of money trail that took officers of the CCCI to at least eight bank accounts opened in Bengaluru and Mizoram.

 

The accused was arrested after the cyber cell took the help of Google to trace his mobile number which he had been using at the time of orchestrating the fraud.

 

The accused Olaniyi (35), who had been putting up in Bengaluru till now - was arrested from Bengaluru on Monday and brought to Noida on transit remand on Wednesday, January 23.

 

Aujo claims to work as a garment exporter who ships the clothes to Nigeria via cargo.

 

SP (crime) Ashok Singh told TOI that Raj Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida, had lodged a complaint in the Kasna police station about the fraud orchestrated between February and May 2018 for which an FIR was lodged on July 9, 2018.

 

An FIR has been lodged in the matter under IPC sections 406, 420, 467, 468, 471 and sections 66, 66 c and 66d of the IT Act.

 

However, the investigation was then transferred to the cyber cell after about four months and the latter started an investigation in November.

 

According to Raj Kumar’s complaint, Aujo had come in touch with Raj Kumar after accessing his email ID.

 

He then made internet calls and voice calls to Raj Kumar offering him a job at a reputed US-based brewing company.

 

“Aujo impersonated as an official of the company and offered him a job as a technical expert in the company. Through repeated calls, he gained the trust of the victim and then sought money in exchange of visa fee and for other documentation to complete the recruitment process,” CCCI inspector Satish Chand told TOI.

 

Raj Kumar apparently had to borrow money from his friends and also mortgage his property, he added, stating that he paid Rs 22 lakh to Aujo in four months.

 

However, after taking all the money from Raj Kumar, Aujo then started avoiding Raj and stopped all the contact. Raj lodged a complaint in July after he realised that he was duped.

 

According to CCCI officers, the money was transferred in at least 16 different accounts - eight in Bengaluru and eight in Mizoram.

 

“These accounts were opened in the names of different individuals - mostly Indians. Their names are being verified and they have apparently taken some percentage of money from Aujo. We are trying to verify the accounts,” Chand said.

 

CCCI officers said that when the investigation was shifted to the cell, they tried to track the gmail account from which transaction was made.

 

A formal request was sent to Google in November seeking the registered phone number with the gmail account being used by Aujo which the software giant provided in January.

 

“We then traced the mobile number and found that he was based in Bengaluru,” Chand said.

 

Aujo was arrested on Monday after which Noida police officers got a transit remand from a local court and brought him to Noida on Wednesday.

 

His passport has expired and it has been recovered by the Noida police from his possession including Rs 1000, two laptops and two mobile phones.

Vandalism, energy theft, attack on staff top EEDC challenges in 2018

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, on Thursday released a review of its activities in the year ended 2018, identifying vandalization of facilities, energy theft, attack on members of staff as some of the major challenges in the sector.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Head, Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh.
Ezeh, however, said the Disco recorded sterling achievements and expressed appreciation to customers “for their support, understanding and overall partnership with the company in the course of the year, despite the numerous challenges that adversely impacted on the quality of service delivery to customers.”
According to him, “some of the recurring challenges which the company grappled with are: vandalism, energy theft, accidental destruction of power facilities, meter bypass, illegal connections and reconnections.
“Others include: non-payment of electricity bills, attack on EEDC field officers and illegal tampering with electrical installations which interfere with the network and in most cases lead to destruction of electrical facilities.
“Following series of engagements with customers, EEDC identified areas of focus and mapped out strategic plans to address them: such as upgrade of some transformers and relieving overloaded ones; installation of entirely new substations; overhauling some weak networks for quality electricity supply.”
He added that “there are also plans to deload some feeders and construct more injection substations to boost electricity supply in identified locations within the network.
“As a matter of fact, contract has been awarded for the construction of a 7.5MVA Injection Substation at ABS, Awka, which will cater for customers within ABS environs, Okpuno, Enugu Agidi, Awka Urban, Zik Avenue and parts of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
“Also approved was the upgrade of Agu Awka Injection Substation from 7.5MVA to 15MVA. Order has been placed for the power transformer which is expected to be delivered hopefully before the end of the month. This will improve supply to customers at Agu Awka, industrial Area, Amansea, Nkwere Awka, Ifite Awka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University permanent site and its environs.
“The management of the company has equally engaged the services of some private contractors to facilitate repair of faulty transformers, thereby shortening the downtime periods experienced in the network.”
Ezeh said that the asset registration and customer enumeration exercise was still ongoing and appealed for maximum cooperation with enumerators, as the exercise was aimed at making EEDC more efficient in providing quality service to customers.
“All these efforts cannot be effectively actualised without the support and cooperation of our esteemed customers.
“Improved electricity supply in the South East will translate to improved business and socio-economic activities; and to achieve this, EEDC is soliciting continued support of her stakeholders and customers,” Ezeh added.

17 remanded in Agodi Prison over Ibadan mayhem

An Ibadan Magistrates court siting in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital has ordered no fewer than seventeen (17) suspects who were arrested for looting and setting fire into shops and houses at Idi-Arere area of Ibadan, Oyo state, to be remanded at Agodi Prison.
The suspects were arraigned before Magistrate Oladele Adisa on Wednesday.
The suspects numbering 17, including four minors were said to have masterminded the mayhem, which rendered many homeless with goods valued at about N40 million either looted or burnt to ashes on Sunday, January 3.
The accused persons were arraigned before Magistrate Oladele Adisa on a three count charge of conspiracy, arson ?and stealing.
In the charge no: MI/91C/2019, the accused pleas were not granted.
The accused persons included two women, four minors and 11 others. They were Adesola Bukola, (38); Ayobami Os?uolale (37); Olayode Lateef (21); Farouk Adedolapo (16); Samson Ayomide (20); Dada Kayode (25); Taye Popoola (20); Kudus Ibrahim (14); and Olatunji Samuel (19).
Others were Adewale Malik (14); Sakura Adegoke, (25); Toheeb Abiodun (24); Sunmonu Kudus (25); Azeez Salau,(24); Akande Saheed (15); Ojekunle Lekan (19) and Sadiq Tirimisiyu (19).
The prosecutor, Mrs. Bola Oloko, told the court that ?the accused persons and others now at large conspired among themselves to commit arson and stealing.
Oloko further explained that the accused ?and others now at large did unlawfully set fire to houses and shops valued at N40million.
According to her, they stole Plasma TV sets, tailoring materials, phones; properties of Tajudeen Ajiboye, Ibrahim Olasupo, Muritala Ibrahim, Mariam Jeje and Zainab Ba?bayanju valued at N25million.
The prosecutor said the offences were contrary to and punishable under Section 516, 443 and 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol.II Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.
In his ruling, Magistrate Adisa ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prisons custody while the four juvenile be arraigned in juvenile court and kept in the remand home till March 8 for legal advice from Director of public prosecution in the state.

‘Mad man’ who killed wife, two children, seven others arrested

The Ebonyi Police Command has arrested an “insane man” from Onyikwa community of Ebonyi Local Government Area, who killed his wife, two children and five other members of the community.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect after killing seven of his victims and wounding four others, fled into the bush before resurfacing to kill another victim.
ASP Loveth Odah, the Ebonyi command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), told newsmen in Abakaliki that the suspect identified as Simon Ugbala, was arrested on Wednesday inside a bush in the community.
Odah noted that a manhunt had been placed on the suspect since Monday by police personnel and youths of the community.
“The suspect was arrested and brought to the police headquarters before being referred to the psychiatric facility of the Federal Teaching Hospital (FETHA), Abakaliki.
“We want to ascertain the suspect’s mental status as he is said to be insane by members of the community,” she said.
The PPRO noted that the report of the suspect’s mental status would assist the police in its investigation into the heinous crime.
“We thank the public for contributing to the suspect’s arrest and assure them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
“Cases of insanity are not one-person’s business as communities should send such persons away from their areas, possibly to psychiatric facilities for adequate care.
“Ebonyi people should not allow such acts to be committed in the state and though the state has the lowest crime rate in the zone, the rate of murder is high,” she added.
